Snake oil salesmen are invading Amazon selling bleach disguised as “water treatments” for COVID-19.
An investigation by the Guardian found chlorine dioxide solutions being sold under the brand name CD Kit and NatriChlor on Amazon — despite a promise from the tech giant to crack down on crackpots. (Since the Guardian’s report, the brand products mentioned in the article now “unavailable” but others, like the Oneness Chlorine dioxide solution, selling for $49.99, are still for sale).
Industrial bleach is being sold on Amazon through its product pages which consumers are buying under the mistaken belief that it is a “miracle cure” for COVID-19, despite health warnings from the US Food and Drug Administration that drinking the fluid can kill you.
The bleach used in the solutions is the kind found in making textiles and bleaching pulp and paper, the news site said. In small amounts, the bleach can indeed disinfect water, but these solutions are using a much higher concentration that are well beyond safety recommendations.
However, it seems people are still purchasing the bottles.
One buyer, according to the Guardian, writing in Spanish, said his family had started taking bleach soon after the coronavirus pandemic hit, noting: “Many people still don’t believe in it, but I am sure that it has helped us a lot.”
Back in April, President Trump insisted he was being sarcastic when he suggested perhaps injecting disinfectants at a press conference, saying: “I see the disinfectant, where it knocks it out in one minute. And is there a way we can do something like that, by injection inside or almost a cleaning, because you see it gets in the lungs and it does a tremendous number on the lungs, so it’d be interesting to check that, so that you’re going to have to use medical doctors with, but it sounds interesting to me.”
After his comment, there was a spike in calls to poison control over people drinking bleach and several deaths and cases of blindness due to people drinking hand sanitizer.
Amazon did not immediately respond to the Guardian about the sale of the bleach on its platform.
