A baronial Winnetka mansion just sold for $6.5 million - Crain's Chicago Business

rinwengi.blogspot.com

A palatial lakefront mansion on Sheridan Road in Winnetka sold for $6.5 million on Tuesday.

The sale is the third-highest priced in the suburb so far this year, after two homes that sold for  $8.75 million and $8.2 million. In 2019, no Winnetka homes sold for more than $5 million.

The mansion, on an acre and a half of land with 118 feet of Lake Michigan shoreline according to the listing, spent one day shy of a month on the market before going under contract to a buyer. The average time Winnetka homes are taking to sell this year is slightly over four months, according to a recent report from Midwest Real Estate Data.

Built in 1928, the house was designed by C. Whitney Stevens, the architect of other impressive mansions on the North Shore and other fashionable places like Hutchinson Street in the city, and west suburban Riverside. The stone façade’s round arches and detailed parapet are part of the Jacobean Revival style, which borrows elements from early 17th century England.

Inside, there’s a grand two-story space where the main staircase leads up to a long, U-shaped promenade. The living room also has detailed wood paneling and a mantelpiece. Intricate ornamental plaster ceilings hang over both of those spaces and the dining room, which opens onto a lake-facing screened porch.

In addition to the purchase price, the buyer will likely have to spend more money rehabbing the home. Photos that accompanied the listing show that the kitchen has not been updated in decades, and there are no photos of the five bathrooms, which suggests they, too, need updating.

Until the sale on Oct. 13, the house was owned by Susan Remien, according to the Cook County Recorder. According to the Cook County Treasurer, the tax bill goes to Robert Remien at the Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin, office of Olds Products of Illinois, a mustard-making company that has been owned by his family since 1897, and Fitzpatrick Bros., a maker of kitchen cleansers that dates to 1894.

Neither Susan nor Robert Remien could be reached for comment, and Peter Cummins, the @properties agent who represented both the sellers and the buyers, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The buyers are not yet identified in public records.

It’s not clear from the records when the Remiens bought the property or what they paid for it, but they owned it from at least January 2003 forward. The property went up for sale August 11, priced at $6.9 million, and went under contract to a buyer Sept. 10. The sale closed Oct. 13.

The $6.5 million home is the tenth Chicago-area property to self or $6 million or more so far in 2020. By this time last year, there had been 12 sales in the price range.
