More than 20 types of dog food and one type of cat food sold by Sunshine Mills, Inc. have been recalled over a concern for possible mold growth on the food. According to the Food and Drug Administration, the company voluntarily recalled the animal food after discovering the food may contain corn from a single load of corn with elevated levels of aflatoxin.
“Aflatoxin is a naturally occurring mold by-product from the growth of Aspergillus flavus and can be harmful to pets if consumed in significant quantities,” according to a release from the FDA.
Thus far no illnesses have been reported by pet owners. Symptoms of overexposure to aflatoxin include sluggishness or lethargy combined with a reluctance to eat, vomiting, yellowish tint to the eyes or gums, diarrhea, and in some cases, death, the release states. If a pet experiences these symptoms after eating the recalled food, they should be seen by a veterinarian.
The impacted foods were produced between April 3, 2020 and April 5, 2020. Product codes on the packaging will show the date the food was produced. The various brands were distributed to retailers across the U.S. Those brands include:

- Sportsman’s Pride
- Sprout
- Thrifty
- Top Runner
