Newark police broke-up a warehouse party Friday night — confiscating $10,000 worth of of liquor and arresting two of the event’s organizers — and issued citations to four businesses for violating coronavirus-related executive orders in a busy Halloween weekend.
The state’s largest city recently unveiled new restrictions to battle an uptick in coronavirus cases, particularly in the Ironbound section of the city. Those restrictions included implementing an 8 p.m. curfew on all non-essential businesses and dine-in restaurants and bars.
On Sunday, the Newark Police Department announced that the Department of Public Safety and Code Enforcement had given citations for “Halloween-related parties” at various establishments around the city. Most of the violations were for not wearing masks and not enforcing social distancing during the parties, Public Safety Director Anthony F. Ambrose said in a press release.
“It’s a shame that after seven months people and owners of these establishments are not taking this pandemic seriously,” Ambrose said. “The value is placed upon wealth vs. health.”
The following establishments received citations: La Rouge Lounge, Zepe’s Cafe Bar, ViVo Lounge and Lit 21. All four businesses were forced to closed Saturday night and Zepe’s Cafe Bar will remain closed until Monday for violating social distancing rules after a prior warning from Alcohol and Beverage Control, officials said.
In addition to the businesses cited, two people were charged for their role in organizing a warehouse party in which police say they seized $10,000 worth of illegally sold bottles of liquor. Police did not identify the organizers.
Newark reported 68 new coronavirus cases Saturday, accounting for nearly half of all new cases in Essex County.
Gov. Phil Murphy has praised the targeted approach used by Newark, saying limited restrictions might hold off larger scale shutdowns.
“We’re trying a scalpel approach," Murphy said Sunday morning on ABC-7. “We hope that will be enough."
