Bill Belichick had an out-of-character moment this week.
When asked about the lack of depth and the situation the New England Patriots are in right now, Belichick deflected to the accomplishments achieved over the past few seasons. Belichick explained how the Patriots sold out in order to win three Super Bowls.
“Look, we paid Cam Newton $1 million. I mean it’s obvious we didn’t have any money. It’s nobody’s fault,” Belichick said. “That’s what we did the last five years. We sold out and won three Super Bowls, played in a fourth and played in a AFC championship game. This year we had less to work with. It’s not an excuse, it’s just a fact.”
While joining ‘The Greg Hill Show’ on Friday morning, Patriots safety Devin McCourty gave his opinion on the comments.
“Do I? It doesn’t matter if I agree or disagree. It definitely doesn’t,” he said, transcribed by WEEI. “I get paid to play free safety. That’s what I do. I am not into all of that other stuff. That is for you guys to decide. You guys get to decide on why we win and why we lose. I am not the expert. I am just a player.”
Frustration is building for the Patriots, as the 2-5 record they hold doesn’t appear to be a mistake. Cam Newton is struggling to provide offense, mostly because of the lack of weapons in all departments. The defense is hurting, struggling and looking like a shell of the 2019 unit.
Belichick’s comments were an accurate depiction of the current state in New England.
