Sharp-eyed passerbys probably noticed new signage outside the former Paris Healthcare Center. The facility is now the Paris Health and Rehab Center (PHRC) under the ownership of Crest Healthcare.
Director of Business Development Kathy Rhoads explained the change in leadership came for several reasons, including former owner Mark Ide’s retirement.
“The new company felt it was a good opportunity to bring in new leadership and have more of a hands-on team managing our facility,” Rhoads said.
She explained Crest Healthcare is a composed of investors and care center operators across the Midwest who share PHRC’s values of teamwork and care.
Alicia Wilson, executive director and administrator, said the transition has been easier than expected because Crest Healthcare is attentive to the needs of staff and residents at their new Paris branch.
“I have not been denied any help I needed,” said Wilson.
The most obvious change to the facility was its new name, but inside PHRC, the first order of business was a raise for all the staff as a thank-you for their hard work during the pandemic. Wilson praised employees and their families alike for rolling with the punches during a chaotic year.
PHRC’s priority throughout 2020 has been keeping residents and employees safe from COVID-19. Visitors must undergo a temperature check and can only meet with residents outside.
Wilson is personally responsible for staff screenings twice a day, and residents are monitored for symptoms every eight hours. Employees are also drilled and updated on COVID-19 safety and care techniques and wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
PHRC has fortunately never faced a PPE shortage like other healthcare centers did earlier in the year. Crest Healthcare has stayed on top of restocking.
“With this new company, we turn in the amount of PPE we have on a daily basis, and if they see we’re running low on stuff they send more to us right away,” Wilson said.
All these measures kept residents safe for months before the first positive case within the building was detected Nov. 14. Wilson said community spread of the disease made this inevitable.
“Unfortunately, everything started opening up around the community,” she said, adding, “We are continuing to do our best to slow it down and get through this.”
According to Crest Healthcare, there are plans to incorporate successful new ideas from other care facilities into PHRC. Whatever changes lie ahead for PHRC, Wilson said the focus will always be people.
“We’re just going to continue focusing on the residents, staff and families so everyone knows they’re appreciated, focus on the community and continue what we’ve been doing even when we’re with the other company,” she said.
Most recently, this focus has translated into plans for safe holiday celebrations.
Rhoads said PHRC will have window decorations courtesy of Millie Arp and her Mayo Middle School art students as well as gifts and cards from several area churches and caroling by staff.
PHRC welcomes any carolers to spread their own socially distanced cheer to residents from outside the facility as Christmas approaches, Rhoads said.
Paris Health and Rehab Center is a nursing home and rehabilitation center whose services include residential care, hospice care, physical therapy and occupational therapy.
