After a yearlong closure due to the Covid-19 pandemic, the pent-up demand for Disneyland tickets and reservations was extraordinary in its first hours on sale — two weeks before the Anaheim resort’s grand reopening.
Less than 12 hours after Disney opened the online sales portal, tickets and advance reservations for the first reopening days, April 30 and May 1, sold out — and weekend days sold out through mid-May at both the Disneyland and Disney California Adventure parks.
To book a visit time, parkgoers need to create or log into a Disney account.
Be aware that you need both a ticket and a reservation for the same park on the same date. “Given the limited availability of theme park reservations, it is recommended that you make your theme park reservations immediately after purchasing your tickets,” advises the Disneyland website.
Many Disney fans who logged onto the Disneyland website starting at 8 a.m. PT yesterday were thrown into “in a waiting room” to join in a virtual queue, and some chronicled their wait times on social media with Disney-themed memes.
“We are experiencing high demand given the historic nature of the Disneyland Resort’s reopening,” said the Disneyland website. “Wait times may be several hours or more depending on when you joined the queue. We still have plenty of reservation availability, and we plan to keep the system open throughout the night to accommodate the demand. Please don’t refresh and we will get you through the queue as soon as we can.”
“The wait is almost over,” the site promised others. “Thank you for your continued patience! Due to high demand, this is taking longer than expected. We have a lot of guests accessing our system, so you are now in a waiting room to plan your park visit.”
By late morning, the site was often generating a “recalculating” message for people after they joined the virtual queue.
If you manage to snag tickets, one big upside will be small crowds. Disneyland Resort is currently limited to just 25% capacity, but that availability will increase along with the state’s four-phase reopening blueprint. For now, only residents of California will be able to visit the theme parks, with groups limited to no more than three different households. To discourage the congregation of large crowds, Disney is also pausing parades, nighttime spectaculars and character experiences.
The website is currently selling tickets for a 60-day period, and there is still plenty of tickets and reservations left at both Disneyland and Disney California Adventure in both May and June—particularly if you choose to visit midweek.
And there’s another upside to choosing a date in June: The much-anticipated Marvel-themed Avengers Campus — which was put on hold during the coronavirus crisis — finally opens at Disney California Adventure on June 4. The entirely new land will be the first one dedicated to super heroes, from Black Panther to Captain America and feature the WEB SLINGERS: A Spider-Man Adventure attraction.
