JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — It’s a big weekend for downtown Jacksonville with two back-to-back sold-out events.
Friday night, Machine Gun Kelly performed at Daily’s Place in front of 5,500 fans.
Live music, screaming fans and a sold-out show. It’s been more than a year since there’s been a full-capacity live concert in Jacksonville.
Lines wrapped around the stadium waiting for people to go inside.
Fans tell us they never thought this day would come.
Courtney Hand drove from Atlanta to be at the concert. “It literally felt hopeless. I’m so happy that this is happening. It’s so great.”
Many drove from out of state just to be here.
Jacob Johnson says, “It took us about 14 hours with stops. It was like 840 something miles from Mason, Ohio.”
It’s a slice of normalcy they’ve all been hoping for and feel ready for too.
“I think we’ve all been locked in too long and it’s time to get back to normal. Especially with the vaccine and everything, it’s time for us to live our lives again,” explains Zoe Martinez.
But the organizers made sure fans knew the risks involved with being at Friday night’s Machine Gun Kelly concert.
“An inherent risk of exposure to COVID-19 exists in any public place where people are present. COVID-19 is an extremely contagious disease that can lead to severe illness and death,” was played over and over again as fans walked in.
Signs were also up telling people to go home if they’re sick. Daily’s Place made everything touchless, no cash was allowed and masks were encouraged but not required, precautions people say they felt safe with.
Hand says, “I feel really good about it. I heard that they’re going to be screening everyone making sure nobody is sick coming in, so I think it will be great.”
