CLEVELAND, Ohio – Five of six items relating to the 1964 Cleveland Browns have sold at a recent auction, including quarterback Frank Ryan’s championship ring.

The items, which were up for bidding via Lelands Auctions, all come from Ryan’s family.

Ryan, now 84, played seven of his 13 years in professional football with the Browns. The pinnacle of his career came Dec. 27, 1964, when the Browns shut out the favored Baltimore Colts, 27-0.

1964 Cleveland Browns NFL Championship ring given to QB Frank Ryan

The size 12.5 ring has a bezel reading “Browns World Champions” around a brown set stone supporting a diamond. It is engraved “Browns 27 - Colts 0” and has Ryan’s name engraved above a helmet. In the game, he tossed three touchdown passes – all to Gary Collins – and Jim Brown accounted for 151 total yards in the victory.

Opening bid: $25,000. Sold for: $30,000.

1964 Cleveland Browns NFL Championship lapel pin

The pin, just more than 1 inch in diameter, has “Browns World Champions” on the bezel surrounding a diamond on the center set stone. Verso has “1964 Cleveland Browns 27, Baltimore 0.” The pin is of the same design as the ring.

Opening bid: $2,500. Sold for: Unsold.

Dec. 12, 1964, Cleveland Browns team-signed game ball

On the road, Ryan threw five touchdowns in the NFL Eastern Conference Championship clincher against the New York Giants. About 30 signatures are on the ball and, while many are difficult to read, owner Art Modell and running back Jim Brown are clearly seen. The official Wilson NFL ball has a hand-painted panel with Brownie the Elf stiff-arming a Giants player. Ryan, who also ran for a touchdown in the game, completed 12 of 13 passes for 202 yards.

Opening bid: $500. Sold for: $2,761.20.

Three Cleveland Browns signed presentational footballs

Three official NFL footballs are signed by Ryan:

1. 1964 Championship team, alumni weekend, Sept. 9-12, 2004.

2. Game ball presented to Ryan has the score - Browns 20, Ravens 3 – from the game on Sept. 12, 2004, along with an inscription of thanks from the 2004 Cleveland Browns.

3. 2005 Cleveland Browns Legend inductee No. 13 Ryan. It’s from Cleveland Browns Legends Weekend, Nov. 20, 2005.

Opening bid: $200. Sold for: $330.

2005 Rolex GMT Master II watch in original box presented to Ryan

Coveted watch is the steel version of the GMT Master II series, self-winding and pressure-proof with black dial and third hand for an additional time zone. Back plate is engraved “Frank Ryan - Cleveland Browns - Quarterback - Legend - 1962-68.” Comes in original green display box with original paperwork certifying this was purchased and shipped to Ryan on Oct. 18, 2005.

Opening bid: $7,500. Sold for: $9,900.

Five 1960s team-signed game balls presented to Ryan

Historic collection of five footballs - four balls from the mid-1960s Browns and one from the 1960 Rams. Three of the Browns footballs are legible and contain Jim Brown’s signature among about 25 to 30 signees. The Rams ball is clear and contains about 45 signatures. Browns items are Pete Rozelle “The Duke” balls; the Rams ball is a rare Bert Bell “The Duke” issue. (Bell preceded Rozelle as commissioner.)

Opening bid: $500. Sold for: $1,417.20.
