Tether Holdings Limited, the issuer of the world’s largest stablecoin, said it hasn’t frozen crypto wallet addresses associated with sanctioned cryptocurrency mixer Tornado Cash.
Earlier this month, the U.S. Treasury Department’s Office of Foreign Assets Control sanctioned Tornado Cash, accusing it of laundering billions of dollars in cryptocurrencies, including $455 million allegedly stolen by North Korean hackers.
Tornado Cash enables users to cover their tracks by obfuscating the origins and destinations of crypto funds.
Shortly after the sanction announcement, Circle Internet Financial Ltd., the issuer of a stablecoin called USD Coin, blocked the sanctioned wallet addresses, effectively freezing the funds in those wallets.
“It is likely that nearly all responsible registered Virtual Asset Service Providers also took steps to block customers from transacting with these addresses, or face charges of willfully avoiding US sanctions compliance obligations,” Circle Chief Executive Jeremy Allaire wrote on Twitter at the time.
In a Wednesday blog, Tether said it hasn’t been requested by any U.S. law enforcement agency or regulator to block those addresses, adding that OFAC hasn't indicated that a stablecoin issuer is expected to freeze those addresses.
“Even if Tether recognizes suspicious activities on such an address, completing a freeze without the verified instruction of law enforcement and other government agencies might interfere with ongoing and sophisticated law enforcement investigations," it said.
A spokesperson for the Treasury Department didn't immediately respond to a request for comment.
