BENNINGTON — After 42 years in business on Main Street, Tom and Angela Husser have sold Bennington Sports and Graphics.

In a recent Facebook post, the Hussers wrote about their time in Bennington,

"Tom and I were 23 years old and newly married when we decided that Bennington, Vermont would be a perfect place for us to move, raise a family, and start a business modeled after that of which Tom's father had in Troy, N.Y.," Angela Husser wrote. "Tom wanted to carry on his family business with an Army-Navy store first named "Bennington Army and Navy."

The business opened in July 1978 in the Quinlan Drugs building, now known as Moulton's Spectacle. In 1985, they bought the old Fishman's Building, which was a 5-and-10 department store before the business moved in.

The company started selling men's clothing and sportswear, evolving into screen printing and embroidery and customized items for local businesses, schools and sports teams.

The shop will remain at 451 Main Street, but will be owned by Frank and Sarah Santacroce. The couple owns ADK Graphics in Cambridge and will merge Bennington Sports and Graphics under its umbrella.

"I emailed Angela for a quote on shirts, and she emailed me back saying they weren't giving out quotes and that the business might not open again," Frank Santacroce said. "I said that would be unfortunate, they've always served the community well. I asked if they were interested in selling, to let me know, I wanted to see it continue."

Santacroce said the Hussers had drafted a letter that the business would close, but at the last minute, they came to a deal.

"Nothing will change, it will still have the same name, the same employee and the same quality product," Santacroce said. "The only difference is I'm here instead of Angela."

Santacroce said his wife is from Hoosick Falls, N.Y., and that the couple moved back to the area in 2007.

"Our company does graphic design, logos and websites and I had the art background and Angela has that too, so it was a perfect fit," Santacroce said.

In her Facebook post, Husser said the family atmosphere of Bennington extended to a lot of the long-time employees and even hiring multiple members of families over the years.

"We feel our family extends to the many people we have worked with, including our most cherished long time employees Carol Brown and Nancy Brown (over 30 years), April Knapp (25 years) and Dick Keogh (20 years). We have employed many students over the years, for many it being their first job.

Each of our children have worked with us at one time or another. We have employed whole families (special shout out to the Reed Family, Guerino Family and the Burgess Family). We know that we can attribute so much of our success to our hard working and loyal employees who have been an extension of our family throughout these years," Husser wrote.

Part of the reason they are leaving is because after more than four decades, there are grandchildren to spend time with.

"We are also looking ahead, to sweet moments with grandchildren, slower mornings, time with friends, and travel together. We are excited. We are apprehensive. Today marks the time which we will walk away from a business we have created, nurtured, grown and adapted for over 42 years. This is a lot of time to devote yourself to the success of one thing. It's a lot of sweat and stress, it's a lot of days and even late nights; it's a lot of time. We can only hope that if this time defines who we are that we have shown our commitment to quality service to our community.

We are feeling grateful for the highlights, the struggles, and most of all for the people who we were able to meet, serve and who helped us serve the community that we truly love," Husser wrote.
