Over at American Stage, they’ve got a problem.
It’s a good problem to have, however. Every remaining performance of the theater’s current show, Natalie Symons’ The People Downstairs, is sold out. That means tonight, Friday, Saturday and Sunday, plus next Friday, Saturday and Sunday, there are no seats left, no tickets available, nada. The final show is Sunday, Oct. 3.
Across the bay, Jobsite Theater opens Dr. Ride’s American Beach House by Liza Birkenmeier Friday (more about this darkly funny show Friday in the Catalyst). And Tampa Repertory Theatre’s one-act showcase, pairing Every Brilliant Thing with Open, continues this weekend and next.
(Speaking as we were of Natalie Symons, the playwright will be at thestudio@620 Monday evening for the official book launch party for her debut novel, Lies in Bone.)
At the movies
Opening Friday at Greenlight Cinema, the documentary The Lost Leonardo traces the “discovery,” in 2005, of a painting titled Salvator Munti – believed (by many, but not all) to be a lost work by Leonardo da Vinci. In 2017, Salvator Munti – an image of Christ – became the most expensive painting ever bought at auction ($450 million, purchased by a Saudi prince and reportedly stored aboard his superyacht). From the “you can’t make this stuff up” department, here’s a story from artnet.com about the mystery of Salvator Munti.
Today at 3 and 7 p.m., Greenlight screens The Nowhere Inn, a faux documentary starring singer/songwriter St. Vincent.
The 2021 Tampa Bay International Gay & Lesbian Film Festival begins Friday at the Tampa Theatre, with Natalie Morales’ Language Lessons. There are films at the Tampa all weekend long. Here’s our story from earlier this week.
Music
Tampa trumpeter James Suggs, a card-carrying member in top standing of the bay area jazz fraternity, performs a concert dedicated to Louis Armstrong Saturday night at the Palladium. Suggs’ band includes Marius Dičpetris, trombone/vocals; Per Danielsson, piano; Brandon Robertson, bass; and Jean Bolduc, drums.
And Armstrong’s daughter, area resident Sharon Preston-Folta, will speak – and sign copies of her book, Little Satchmo: Living in the Shadow of My Father, Louis Daniel Armstrong, in the Palladium lobby. Info and tickets here.
The Gasparilla Music Festival is happening Friday through Sunday in, on and around Tampa’s Riverwalk; headliners include Gov’t Mule, Soft Tukker and Nas, and there’s music all day, every day. Check here for the schedule and ticket info.
Dance, fine art and more
Friday at the Straz Center’s Ferguson Hall, flamenco dancer and choreographer Siudy Garrido performs with her ensemble; the work, Bailaora, is set to traditional flamenco instrumentation with contemporary synthesized sounds.
“As a choreographer, Garrido blends traditional aspects of flamenco — the rapid-fire footwork, the expressive curvature of the arms and extended fingers, with a sense of modern movement more akin to Martha Graham.” – San Francisco Voice. Details and tickets here.
Dancer/choreographer Alex Jones is back with his highly creative Project Alchemy troupe, Saturday and Sunday at thestudio@620. Blending dance with technology, past with present and the ephemeral with the installed, the third annual “Momentum Choreographer’s Showcase” (7 p.m. Saturday, 2 p.m. Sunday) features performers Emily Goonan, Kayla Gupta, Deisha King and Shannon Smyth. Info and tickets here.
The weekend’s new museum exhibition Warhol’s West, at the James Museum of Western and Wildlife Art, with 60-some screen prints, early works and other pieces from legendary pop artist Andy Warhol. It opens Saturday; read all about it here.
Comedian Tom Segura (Ball Hog; Disgraceful) performs Saturday at Morsani Hall, inside the Straz Center.
It’s the 1970s all over again Saturday as Australia’s Little River Band plays Ruth Eckerd Hall, and the indomitable jazz outfit Spyro Gyra takes the Capitol Theatre stage.
