After 30 years of family ownership, the Portland Sea Dogs have been sold to an organization that owns affiliated minor league baseball teams across the country.

“After thirty years of ownership and following our best season ever in 2022, the time is right for our family to move on,” said Bill Burke, Chairman of the Portland Sea Dogs, in a news release Tuesday. “We are very pleased to have found in DBH an ownership team with deep experience in minor league baseball and strong commitments to Portland, the Red Sox and, most importantly, Geoff Iacuessa and his remarkable front office staff.”

The new owner is Diamond Baseball Holdings.

The Burke family has been only owners of the Sea Dogs, whose inaugural season was in 1994.

The Sea Dogs will continue to be managed by current staff, including Iacuessa, the team’s president and general manager, and will remain the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox.

According to its web page, Diamond Baseball Holdings operates a number of minor league teams, including the Iowa Cubs, the Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals, and the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Rail Riders, the Triple-A affiliate of the New York Yankees.
