For the first time in 46 years, the biggest local hardware chain in the metro area is not owned by someone named Frattallone.
The 22 stores of Fratallone’s Ace Hardware have been sold to the Central Network Retail Group (CNRG), based in Collierville, Tenn.
The stores’ founder, Larry Frattallone, announced the sale for an undisclosed amount of money. He co-owns the stores with sons Tom and Mike.
With the acquisition of Frattallone’s, CNRG owns 139 hardware stores, home centers and lumberyards in 16 states. Frattallone’s will be the 18th brand operated by CNRG.
The first Frattallone’s store was opened in Arden Hills in 1975. The family business grew rapidly, with hardware and garden stores throughout the metro area. The most recent store opened in January in Little Canada. In 2015 the company moved its headquarters to the former Carroll’s Furniture building in Arden Hills.
Tom and Mike Frattallone will hold “key leadership roles for the local Frattallone’s brand and CNRG,” according to the website for the Hardware Connection. Mike Frattallone, contacted by phone Tuesday, chose not to comment on the sale.
“Our family is excited to be partnering with an industry-leading retailer like CNRG,” Larry Frattallone said in a news release. “Frattallone’s and CNRG are a great fit. We both understand the importance of taking care of customers and operating first-rate local hardware stores.”
CNRG President John Sieggreen said the purchase of Frattallone’s will help business in the rest of his company.
“We are thrilled about the opportunity to work with the Frattallones,” Sieggreen said. “Their reputation in the Twin Cities is unparalleled. There is so much we will be able to learn from them and apply to our other brands throughout the company.”
