The city purchased the property after the original owner and their son died and the house became a hazard to the community in 2020.

Holly Hansen, community development director for the city, was working with adjacent property owners to bring the proposal to the council.

“After some of the prodding of some of the neighbors that are in the audience here this evening, the city building official issued an enforcement order to remove a home that had collapsed in on itself,” she said.

The Cloquet Economic Development Authority brought the proposal to the council to redevelop the large lot after the city purchased it.

Nancy Hendrickson, an adjacent neighbor of the property, was at the meeting and said she was happy officials were taking care of the property.

“It is nice to see something good happening in our neighborhood,” she said.

Proposals for redevelopment were sent to 13 contractors in Carlton County and only one, Boss Builders, responded to the EDA.

Boss Builders' response was to purchase the property and build one twin home on the lot.

The city will recoup $37,500 of the $78,000 it spent on purchasing and preparing the property for development.

“It is not necessarily a great deal, but an important deal to utilize the funds the EDA does have available to us,” Hansen said. “The objectives of the EDA working on this property is to take the opportunity to redevelop and deal with the nuisance that was present on the property.”

With the addition of the twin home, there will be two new homes added to the tax roll with the property.

Ward 5 Councilor Lyz Jaakola wanted to commend Hansen for her work on the project and her work with residents.

"Overall the neighborhood is going to benefit, and I am happy to see that the residents are here as well," she said.
