It turns out there’s pent-up demand for small, fuel-efficient pickups.
Ford announced its 2022 Maverick hybrid pickup in June and sold out of them in November – before the first one ever reached a customer’s hands.
There hasn’t been a true compact pickup on the American market in about a decade. Trucks and SUVs have grown in size to the point where crash testing agencies have begun redesigning their tests to reflect that we’re likely to be hit by a larger vehicle these days.
Two New Small Trucks
But, in 2021, automakers gambled that Americans still had an appetite for a truck that could maneuver easily in urban traffic. Hyundai introduced its Santa Cruz “Sport Adventure Vehicle.” And Ford gave us the Maverick – a truck small enough that, our reviewer notes, it’s easy for most adults to load the bed from the side.
One Hybrid, and That’s the One Selling Out
The Maverick comes with a choice of two powertrains. A more powerful 2.0-liter Ecoboost 4-cylinder engine making 250 horsepower gives it a 4,000-pound towing capacity. But it also comes at a higher price tag.
At just $19,995, the entry-level Maverick carries a 191-horsepower hybrid powertrain. It’s good for 42 mpg in the city and 33 on the highway.
That one proved more popular than the factory could accommodate. Ford announced today that it has sold out of Maverick hybrids. “Ordering will reopen next summer,” says Mike Levine, head of Ford North American Product Communications. It is still possible to reserve a gasoline-powered Maverick.
