The local franchisee of a Florida-based business is moving forward with plans to expand in Michigan.
Ford's Garage restaurant franchisee Billy Downs plans to open a second location at 44175 12 Mile Road in Novi in the first quarter of 2023, according to a Ford's Garage spokesperson.
The Novi location will follow a West Dearborn location Downs opened in 2017. Downs also plans to open three other Michigan locations. The sites will be announced at a later date, according to the spokesperson. The expansion plans were announced early last year.
The site of Downs' first Ford's Garage, located at 21367 W. Michigan Ave., has been sold.
According to Wayne County land records, Ford's real estate arm, Ford Land Development Co., sold the Ford's Garage building to an entity called 21367 Michigan Avenue LLC for what Crain's estimates is $4 million in November. That entity is registered to Christopher Barbat in Birmingham.
Neither Downs nor the spokesperson responded to requests for comment on the sale. It is unknown if the business has been sold.
Downs still plans to open three more Ford's Garage restaurants in Michigan. Each restaurant will be about 8,900 square feet with seating for 250 guests and employ 95-115 people. The total investment to open a Ford's Garage, including a $50,000 franchise fee, ranges from $1.46 million to $6.35 million.
Tampa, Florida-based Ford's Garage, established in 2012 in Fort Myers, Florida, currently has 24 locations, including the Novi restaurant, listed on the company website. The chain has expanded to Michigan, Kentucky, Ohio, Indiana and Texas. Ford's Garage has a licensing agreement with Ford Motor Company.
Downs, a past Crain's 40 under 40 honoree, is no stranger to the restaurant game.
The Detroit Catholic Central and Michigan State University graduate founded BD's Mongolian Grill in 1991. Downs sold the business in 2008 to a New York-based private equity firm. The first BD's opened in 1992 in Royal Oak.
The Ford's Garage restaurants feature a menu that includes Black Angus and vegetarian burgers, decor including Model T's and Model A's hanging above a bar with more than 100 beers. Staff are dressed in blue mechanics shirts. Bathroom sinks are made from tires and fuel pump nozzles.
