Midcentury modern time capsule, designed by famed architect, sold ‘as is' - OregonLive

A midcentury modern home in Northeast Portland’s Concordia neighborhood has survived six decades and two owners without being modified.

The double-lot property, at 6535 N.E. 37th Ave., was put on the market July 27 at $450,000, without a promise to replace the leaky roof or make significant repairs. The terms: To be sold as is, cash only.

Within eight days, listing agent Beth Howard of Premiere Property Group received calls from real estate agents representing 10 buyers and a cash offer is now pending.

“it is hard to find homes that haven’t been ruined or updated,” says Howard. “It will take a special buyer to hopefully keep most of this house in its original condition.”

She says the backyard once had a pool, which would have made the property the “coolest 1960s party pad around.”

The time-capsule home has more going for it than authentic, “Mad Men”-era swank and original fixtures, window coverings and kitchen appliances.

The dwelling with vaulted, beamed ceilings was designed by modern architect (Robert) Bud Origndulph to maximize indoor-outdoor living. There are side-by-side sliding doors, panels of glass forming walls, and ribbons of clerestory windows framing the sky.

Other midcentury modern trademarks include floors of cement squares, radiant heat and a two-sided fireplace.

“The home will need some work to bring it back to glory, but it is well worth it,” states Howard in her marketing materials.

The first owner, a bachelor, bought the house when it was new in 1957 and the second owner, also a bachelor, held on to it since 2000, says Howard. His estate is selling the property.

Oringdulph was a recent graduate of University of Oregon’s school of architecture when he designed the home, which has two bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms and 1,460 square feet of living space.

He is a surviving contemporary of the late, renowned Portland architects Saul Zaik and Van Evera Bailey, and is best known as the lead architect of the Oak Hills master planned community in Beaverton, a mix of 1960s ranch, split-level and Robert Rummer-built atrium homes.

Oak Hills earned a spot on the National Register of Historic Places.

Oringdulph, one of the founding principals of Boora Architects, designed many modern homes, often with a carport, including this one for sale.
