KUTZTOWN, Pa. - Inside the Young Ones record shop on South Whiteoak Street in Kutztown, beneath a clear plastic covering, is a swooping black Magic Marker shape.
"Seems like her fans are really appreciative and really excited about it," said Chris Holt, the store's owner.
The swooping shape is the signature of Berks County native Taylor Swift, spread across her latest audio effort, "Folklore."
"Most stores got 30," Holt said. "We got 60 because we are near Reading, which is Taylor's hometown."
Young Ones was provided with more signed copies than any other store in the country. The store said Swift is sending them out to support independent music shops, especially ones so close to her roots.
"[It's] pretty cool," said David Toolan, a freshman at Kutztown University. "I mean, I've met a few people who knew Taylor when she was younger in Reading, and I've heard lots of stories of her performing at Knoebels, things like that."
The album's title speaks to the idea of a shared culture. And, in fact, a certain allotment of the copies are only being sold to those in and around the Reading area, to some who have followed her folklore since the Wyomissing native's very first track.
"You know, they shouldn't be shut out," Holt said of the singer's earliest fans. "A lot of those people supported her from the beginning, so we are trying to make sure they get in the right hands."
Those right hands are the hands of local fans who keep listening, especially to something new and unique, that was, at least for a moment, in the hands of one of the biggest artists in pop music.
"Sending them randomly to stores to release at a regular price, [that's] pretty unheard of," Toolan said.
"Folklore," Swift's eighth studio album, was released last month.
