A Smithfield-area resident may be the winner of a $2 million Powerball prize.

The Virginia Lottery said the winning ticket was sold Aug. 19 at Rushmere Station Food Mart, at 4761 Old Stage Highway in Smithfield. The winning numbers for that Powerball drawing were 13-23-47-55-58, and the Powerball number was 23.

“This ticket matched the first five numbers and missed only the Powerball number,” lottery officials said in an announcement. “Normally that would win Powerball’s second prize of $1 million. However, the person who bought this ticket spent an extra dollar for Power Play. That doubled the prize to $2 million.”

As of midday Aug. 20, the winner had not yet come forward to Virginia Lottery officials. Whoever has the ticket has 180 days from the date of the drawing to claim the prize. The Virginia Lottery advises the winner should immediately sign the back of the ticket to establish ownership.

The store that sold the winning ticket will also receive a $10,000 bonus from the Virginia Lottery.

Powerball drawings are held at 10:59 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays. They are broadcast live on TV and on valottery.com. Tickets are $2 per play and sold in 45 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
