Clementon Park & Splash World was sold at auction for $2.37 million Tuesday to a buyer intent on reopening the 114-year-old amusement facility in Camden County, the company that sold it said.

The identity of the buyer was not immediately announced but officials with Capital Recovery Group, the auction company that sold the foreclosed property, said Wednesday they expect the new owner to reopen the park.

“We had a lot of interest,” Bill Firestone, chief executive officer of CRG told NJ Advance Media on Wednesday. “I was basically very happy of the result, especially because someone is going to buy it and going to open it. My indication is he wants to move very quickly.”

The online auction started at 10 a.m. Tuesday and ended by mid-afternoon. Bids were taken on the entire property and individual items. The $2.37 million winning bid is for everything in the park and a liquor license.

Capital Recovery Group was offering Clementon as a “turnkey or redevelopment opportunity” that included the property, rides and a liquor license, to be sold in its entirety or piecemeal.

Some of the rides include the Sea Dragon arc swing with a 40-person capacity; Ring of Fire, a 360-degree loop ride; a giant ferris wheel; and a train system with a cooled propane engine, three 18-foot long cars and a rail system.

The park had been upgraded in recent years with a splash park, including a 23,000-square-foot wave pool and beach, which were among 29 attractions.

It had recently been listed as the second most valuable property in Clementon, a 2-square-mile, bedroom community of 4,900 residents. The borough borders Route 30, the White Horse Pike, which was once a key corridor to the Jersey Shore leading to Atlantic City, 47 miles away.

The park sits at the top of the main access road to the reclusive, exclusive municipality of Pine Valley, widely considered the top-ranked golf course in the world.

The park, founded in 1907, was assessed at $4.25 million in 2019. It had appraised for twice as much in 2011 before a series of tax appeals cut its assessed value in half. The owners convinced a court it was overvalued compared to comparable small, theme parks, a local official said.

The site had been owned by Premier Parks, an Oklahoma company. Clementon Park no longer appears on a map of its 14 amusement parks around the country and in Hawaii.
