Urban Meyer is sold on Trevor Lawrence, skips Zach Wilson’s Pro Day
If there was any doubt about Trevor Lawrence being the top pick in the 2021 NFL Draft later this April, that was put to rest on Friday.
Trevor Lawrence, who has been considered the No. 1 overall pick in this coming draft for more than a half-decade now by most, has been under a microscope by certain NFL analysts as we head closer to the big night.
Though almost everyone agrees that Lawrence is a generational talent, the truth remains that a handful of analysts have maintained the position that he isn’t the top prospect or even the top quarterback in the draft.
Chris Simms, for example, has Lawrence ranked No. 2 behind BYU’s Zach Wilson.
Despite his constant takes of saying that ‘Wilson has a higher ceiling’ or that ‘he is the better prospect,’ it doesn’t seem that the Jacksonville Jaguars are listening.
The New York Post reported Friday that while every other team that was drafting inside the top-10 had either its GM, head coach or both present, Urban Meyer decided it wasn’t worth the time to come see Wilson in-person.
A quote from Meyer back in early March listed in the article is even more telling:
“I do like to get very close to a quarterback and hear,” Meyer told Jaguars.com. “You say, ‘Hear what?’ I want to hear that ball leave his hand. I want to hear that ball go by my head. I do the same thing at practice. And I do want him to know we’re right there. You’ll see me do that with our kickers, too. I’m going to get real close to them. Life’s about how you can respond to pressure.”
Now, why would Meyer skip out on the draft’s ‘best quarterback prospect’ when his team is picking No. 1 overall and is expected to take a quarterback?
It’s because he already came to Trevor Lawrence’s Pro Day and there’s nothing going to derail that train from its tracks
All this speculation from multiple national outlets about how Lawrence might not be the No. 1 overall pick was proven foolishness on Friday.
If the Jaguars had any inkling of a doubt that Lawrence wasn’t the pick, they would’ve had Meyer in attendance to see Wilson live.
The Jaguars did send their offensive coordinator Darrell Bevell, but that is more of a politeness tactic rather than anything of real consideration.
Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence is going No. 1 overall, just like we’ve all said from the beginning. Well, everyone except those ‘hot-take analysts’ who have been seeking attention.
