Decades ago, Rae Elizabeth Kellgren spent a year cross-stitching “America the Beautiful,” a map of the country featuring each state’s capital, flower and bird, WCCO reported.
“Anyone who does cross-stitch knows you start in one corner, and if you make a mistake, you have to restart,” grandson Tyler Redden told KTSP. “So she started this 3-foot-by-2-feet tall piece from the East Coast because she knew that was going to be the hardest part. If she was going to mess up, it was going to be over there. So she started stitching it from the top right and kept going down, knowing that it would get easier as she went,” Redden said.
Kellgren planned to submit it to the Minnesota State Fair, but a friend noticed she did not include Topeka, the capital of Kansas. So, instead it hung for years on the wall as art.
“It was there since I was a baby. I grew up with that piece as the centerpiece of her living room,” Redden told WCCO. “I’ll always remember it. Everybody remembers the story as she told it.”
Kellgren died in August and “America the Beautiful” was accidentally sold for $10 during an estate sale in October. Redden would like to find the item, hopefully in time to display it during Kellgren’s memorial service, which is in a few months.
