MONTEREY — After going on sale to the general public July 14, tickets for the 64th annual Monterey Jazz Festival officially sold out Tuesday.
“To have it sell out that fast has been very exciting for us,” said Timothy Orr, marketing associate of the Monterey Jazz Festival. “It shows that people are ready to come back and have live music again.”
The festival’s lineup will feature 22 performances on two stages for 21 hours of continuous music at the Monterey County Fair and Event Center.
Artists to be featured at the festival’s key venue, the Lyons Stage Arena, include Herbie Hancock, George Benson, Terri Lyne Carrington + Social Science, Pat Metheny Side-Eye, Ledisi, Christian Sands Group, Kandace Springs with special guest Immanuel Wilkins, Las Cafeteras, Miho Hazama and m_unit, and the Next Generation Jazz Orchestra, directed by Gerald Clayton.
In between headlining acts, the music will continue outside the Arena at the Yamaha Courtyard Stage with multiple daily sets from the Mimi Fox Organ Trio, Giveton Gelin Quartet, Immanuel Wilkens Quartet, and the Next Generation Women in Jazz Combo.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, the two-stage festival will be held to 50% capacity, allowing room for only 2,500 guests throughout the weekend.
“We knew it was going to be smaller but mighty,” he said. “Now that we say we’re sold out, I’m sure there’s going to be a fear of missing out.”
Still, despite limited capacity, the Jazz Fest is determined to bring jazz to everyone on the Peninsula, ticket or not.
For those unable to attend the festival, the Jazz Fest will also be launching its After Hours Program, which will provide additional opportunities for the larger public to enjoy jazz music throughout the weekend. Taking place for the first time, MJF After Hours will invite local artists to play live shows at restaurants and venues across the Monterey Peninsula in the hours after the festival ends.
“The feeling of the festival will extend into the community,” said Orr.
Details on locations and times for MJF After Hours will be available in early August. More information about the 64th annual Monterey Jazz Festival can be found at www.montereyjazzfestival.org.
