The barbecue smoker at Robin’s Wood Fire BBQ is making way for robotic arms.

Motiv Space Systems is expanding into the former site of the popular Robin’s Wood Fire BBQ at 395 N. Rosemead Blvd. in a deal worth $4 million.

Robin Salzer, who owned the site for nearly 40 years, said Motiv is an “incredible local Pasadena business” — one that will “propel” the site to its “next chapter.”

He wasn’t really kidding. Motiv’s specialty, robot parts, are on Mars right now.

The company describes its robotic arm on the Perseverance rover “as the most sophisticated robotic arm ever sent to Mars.” In a collaboration with NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, the company created the Cold Operable Lunar Deployable Arm  for use during planned Artemis missions on the moon.

The plan for the new site — or rather, the old site of the barbecue restaurant — is to research and develop ground-based robotic systems while the company would stay at its other Pasadena site on North Halstead Street, where it would continue to research and develop space-based robotic systems, according to Kyle Barratt, vice president at CBRE Advisory & Transaction Services, which represented the buyer — Second Stage Property LLC — in the transaction for the nearly 6,000-square-foot space with a distinctive roof.

For years, Salzer carved out the building’s previous chapter, developing his restaurant, which some call “iconic,” into a popular local spot where on weekends you might find him behind the restaurant’s smoker, working hard to make customers happy.

“In the restaurant business, you work every weekend and every holiday because that’s when you do the most volume,” he told the Star-News back in 2019. “And when you’re name is on the sign, they expect to see you there.”

Salzer parlayed his business’ notoriety into giving back, providing food each week for the needy and groups.

At 66, after 37 years, he decided to close in August 2019 and become a landlord, while continuing his catering business  and handing the reins to employees he’d basically mentored. Robin’s BBQ catering trucks and concessions were also seen at the Rose Bowl and throughout Southern California since the ’80s.

Agents in the deal touted it as a “win-win” sale.

“After almost 40 years, it was time for Robin to move on to his next endeavor” said Bill Ukropina of Coldwell Banker Commercial’s Pasadena Office, where a team represented Salzer in the transaction.

Salzer himself saw it as a final, official goodbye, even as he looked toward the future.

“After 41 years in the restaurant industry I retired seven months before COVID-19 took its toll on the world,” he said in a statement. “My timing was a true blessing, I am just as blessed to sell my property to an incredible local Pasadena business. The property’s next chapter will be exciting to watch.

“On a very personal note, I would like to thank everyone who walked through my front door, guest or staff, visited Robin’s at the Rose Bowl or special event or gave Robin’s the opportunity to be your caterer. Thank you for allowing my kitchen to be your kitchen. Without your love and support 37 wonderful years could have been 37 months.”
