Even among the 64 total comparable McLaren F1s built, McLaren F1 Chassis No. 029 is a special car. This is the car that has just 240 original miles, a pristine example of what is nothing less than the perfect supercar. When it was announced as part of this weekend's Gooding & Company auction at Pebble Beach, we estimated that it would sell for around $20 million. It sold yesterday for a stunning $20,465,000.

Like all F1s, Chassis No. 029 is powered by a BMW-derived 6.1-liter V-12, is piloted from a center-mounted seat, and is capable of a jaw-dropping 231 miles per hour. All of this makes it nothing less than one of the greatest cars ever built, making this nearly-untouched example with the original Goodyear Eagle F1 tires a perfect time capsule of automotive perfection itself. The $20 million is a notable price, but the value is not from its mileage and preservation alone; a similar F1 sold four years ago for $15 million.

Although most cars with such low mileage are likely to retain mileage that low forever, the inherent rarity of the F1 makes any example an exceptionally valuable thing. A car this historically significant can certainly lose value with mileage, but it would be almost impossible for it to lose its value altogether. Hopefully, the new owner figures this out and drives the F1 at least far enough to see what made it so worthy of preserving in the first place.
