(OBA®) – Gulf Shores, AL – In 1978, Sheila Hodges moved to Gulf Shores with two grade-school kids, a toddler and a husband who was starting new in the construction business. She took a job as a real estate agent with Meyer Realty.

“Back then the office was also in vacation rentals and I was a sales agent,” Hodges said. “My excitement in getting into real estate would be an understatement. In my mind I just knew I was where God planted me. As it turned out 40 plus years later, indeed, God planted me and dozens of others to work together to be 'all we could be.'”

More than 40 years later, Hodges is again a real estate agent with Meyer Realty. But a lot happened in those intervening years other that listing and selling properties. She eventually bought the company and turned it into one of the biggest and best vacation rental and real estate companies on the Alabama/Florida Gulf Coast.

This week it was announced vacation rental giant Vacasa has bought Meyer Real Estate and its 980 current vacation rental properties. This comes just a few months after Sheila Hodges sold the business to her daughter, Michelle Hodges, and CEO Les Williams.

“Regardless of which business sells or just passes on to the next generation there will always be change,” Sheila Hodges said. “Some unexpected, some directed, and some disastrous. We are blessed on this Island to have a heritage of hard working, free spirited, brave and inventive people. Fortunately, like kind attracts like kind so I believe we will always have them among our new residents.”

Fellow vacation rental owner Leonard praised Sheila Hodges’ work throughout the community and the industry during her tenure on the Gulf Coast.

“Our approach to business is what has been the cornerstone of how Shelia and the other pillars of the industry in our community—Kaisers, Bodenhamers, Bretts, Robinsons, Bollers—work toward, and that cornerstone is relationships and family-friendly business practices,” Kaiser said. “So change such as this can be a little concerning that we don’t lose what has been worked so hard for and for so many years.”

Kaiser and brother Glen Kaiser sold their vacation rental company to Wyndham in 2013 and Wyndham was eventually bought out by Vacasa as well. Leonard Kaiser said he recently and and Glen Kaiser revived Kaiser Vacation Rentals.

In recent years, Vacasa has also acquired TurnKey and Mandoki Hospital to add to their inventory on the Gulf Coast and the purchase of Meyer doubles its offerings with the addition of 980 Meyer properties. It includes rental properties in Orange Beach and Perdido Key as well.

Michelle Hodges and Williams will remain in SH Enterprises managing Starr Textiles, the laundry operation used by Meyer and other vacation rental companies, and Meyer Real Estate.

“I sincerely hope that both Les Williams and Michelle Hodges continue their contribution of talents to our community for years to come,” Sheila Hodges said.
