Dole Fresh Vegetables Inc. has recalled certain types of bagged salad over concerns of listeria.
The Food and Drug Administration said no illnesses have been reported but the voluntary recall was issued after a sample test by the Georgia Department of Agriculture came back positive for monocytogenes, a bacterium that can lead to listeria infection.
The salad was sold under several different brand names. It was distributed in Alabama and nine other states: Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia.
The recall covers:
- 24-ounce Dole Garden Salad, lot codes N28205A and N28205B, UPC code 0-71430-01136-2
- 24-ounce Marketside Classic Salad, lot codes N28205A and N28205B, UPC code 6-81131-32895-1
- 12-ounce Kroger Brand Garden Salad, lot codes N28211A and N28211B, UPC code 0-11110-91036-3
- 12-ounce Salad Classics Garden Salad, lot codes N28211A and N28211B, UPC code 6-88267-18443-7
All of the impacted products are beyond the “best if used by” date and should no longer be sold in stores. Consumers are asked to check with products in their homes and discard any that match the lot and UPC codes.
No other Dole products (or products manufactured by Dole) are included in the recall.
Listeria monocytogenes is an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Although healthy individuals may suffer only short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women.
