U.S. stock futures edged down to start a week that will see the first wave of major corporate earnings reports of the third quarter.

Futures on the S&P 500 fell 0.3% and futures tied to the Dow Jones Industrial Average were down 0.2%. The contracts don't necessarily predict moves after the opening bell.

Europe stocks declined Monday for a four-day losing streak. The Stoxx Europe 600 shed 0.5% in morning trade. Consumer staples and financials sectors led the losses while the materials sector rose.

The U.K.'s FTSE 100 was down 0.4%. Other stock indexes in Europe also mostly slipped as France's CAC 40 lost 0.8%, the U.K.'s FTSE 250 was lower 0.6% and Germany's DAX was lower 0.6%.

The Swiss franc depreciated 0.1% against the U.S. dollar, with 1 franc buying $1.00. The euro was flat against the dollar, with $1 buying 1.0277 euro. The British pound was up 0.3% against the U.S. dollar, with 1 pound buying $1.11.

In commodities, Brent crude was down 0.2% to $97.77 a barrel. Gold was also down 0.8% to $1,695.20 a troy ounce.

German 10-year bund yields declined to 2.164% and 10-year U.K. government debt known as gilts yields gained to 4.250%. Bond yields and prices move inversely.

Indexes in Asia mostly fell as Hong Kong's Hang Seng lost 2.7% and China's benchmark Shanghai Composite shed 1.7%.
