Cal State Fullerton has found a buyer for the $10 million collection of postwar sports and grand touring cars donated by Nicholas Begovich, an engineer, philanthropist and longtime Fullerton resident who died May 3.

The Audrain Automobile Museum in Newport, Rhode Island, has bought the collection for future display, CSUF officials announced Wednesday, May 20. The collection has already been shipped to the museum, a university spokeswoman said.

The money from the sale will support the university’s Center for Gravitational-Wave Physics and Astronomy, as well as research in sustainable energy and power by its College of Engineering and Computer Science.

After touring the gravitational-wave center, which made contributions to the first discovery of the ripples in the fabric of space-time in 2016, Begovich became an enthusiastic supporter of the research and the center.

Begovich started collected the cars in the early 1950s. Many of the vehicles came directly from their factories, including the 1969 Lamborghini Miura which Begovich bought in Italy.

Officials said Begovich had wanted the 14-car collection to remain as one piece. With the help of comedian Jay Leno, who connected CSUF officials to the museum, the university was able to find a buyer willing to honor those wishes, spokeswoman Cerise Valenzuela Metzger said in an e-mail.

Begovich, and his wife, Lee, donated the collection to Cal State Fullerton earlier this year; it became the lead gift launching the “It Takes a Titan: The Campaign for Cal State Fullerton,” a $200 million five-year comprehensive fundraising campaign.

The museum is planning a special exhibition featuring the collection, CEO Donald Osborne said in the university’s press release.

“We are so grateful to be able to share Nick Begovich’s wonderful and historic cars with our visitors here, in Newport, and through our digital initiatives with the world,” he said. “The collection includes some of the most important, rare and desirable cars in the world.”
