Maker 4E Global, SAPI de CV has issued a recall for a number of hand sanitizer varieties, most sold under the "Blumen" brand name. Many of the recalled hand sanitizers were tested by the FDA and shown to contain Methanol, or wood alcohol, a substance that can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and can be life-threatening when ingested. Other recalled Blumen hand sanitizers were reported to have been made at the same facility as the contaminated products.
This recall is part of the FDA's ongoing investigation into the use of methanol in hand sanitizers. Though most hand sanitizers do contain alcohol, methanol is not approved for use as an active ingredient due to its potential harmful effects. Earlier in July, the Times Union reported on manufacturer ITECH 361 issuing a recall for more than 18,940 bottles of hand sanitizer due to the presence of methanol.
The FDA says it has received reports of adults and children ingesting hand sanitizer products contaminated with methanol and either being killed or hospitalized.
According to website myBJswatcher.com, BJ's is accepting returns of the affected Blumen's hand sanitizer with or without a receipt.
