Michigan produced 1,428,445 barrels of beer in 2019, up 4% from 2017 and eight times more than the amount produced in 2008, according to federal statistics.
The growth in Michigan beer production continues to buck a national trend, in which U.S. beer production is trending down, based on data from the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau.
Most beer made in Michigan is craft beer, made by small, independent brewers.
The state’s leading producers of beer are Bell’s Brewery based in Kalamazoo and Founders Brewing Co., headquartered in Grand Rapids.
Below are some fast fasts about beer in Michigan, based on the latest numbers.
2019 Michigan beer sales/production
First is a database based on data from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
The database allows you to look up the amount of beer produced and/or sold in Michigan by individual businesses in each of the four categories: Wholesalers, brewers, microbrewers and brewpubs.
For wholesalers, it’s the amount of beer sold. For in-state producers, it’s the amount of beer produced and sold within Michigan. (There is a separate listing for each license, which means multiple listings for some businesses.)
You can search by category of seller, county or by the name of the business.
The caveats about the numbers: This only includes beer sold in Michigan, and not beer sold outside the state, and for brewpubs, the numbers only include sales of beer produced in-house.
You'll notice the businesses are divided into four categories. Here are the distinctions:
- Wholesalers distribute beer made outside Michigan. That’s about 90% of the beer market.
- Brewers are allowed to manufacture more than 60,000 barrels of beer a year. There are two companies with such licenses in Michigan -- Bell’s Brewery and Founders Brewing Co.
- Microbreweries are limited to producing 60,000 barrels a year. Like Bell's and Founders, microbreweries can sell their beer to wholesalers and their license also allows operation of a bar or restaurant that sells beer by the glass.
- Brewpubs can produce up to 18,000 barrels of beer a year. Under the terms of their license, brewpubs must operate a full-service restaurant and cannot sell their beer to wholesalers.
Interactive map
Next is an interactive map that shows beer production by county.
The numbers do not include Michigan-made beer sold out of state. Also, the numbers are based on Michigan-produced beer sold in 2019 vs. unsold inventory.

The No. 1 county is Kalamazoo, home of Bell’s Brewery. Between Bell’s and the county’s microbreweries and brewpubs, there was 131,206 barrels of beer produced in the county and consumed within the state.
The No. 2 county was Kent, headquarter of Founders. About 105,000 barrels were produced in the county and consumed within Michigan.
More fast facts
Below are some more fast facts about beer sales and production in Michigan, courtesy of data from the federal Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau and the Michigan Liquor Control Commission.
U.S. beer production trending down
U.S. breweries produced 179.9 million barrels of beer in 2019 compared to 182.8 million in 2018 and 199.7 million in 2008. The latter is a 10% drop over the past decade.
The 2019 number equates to about 41 ounces of beer a week for every American, regardless of age.
Michigan ranks 19th in beer production. The top five states: Colorado, Texas, California, Ohio and Virginia.
Michigan beer production trending up
In reverse of the nationwide trend, Michigan beer production is trending up.
Michigan breweries produced 1.43 million barrels of beer in 2019 compared to about 180,000 barrels in 2008, almost an eight-fold increase, according to the federal data.
In 2019, 66% of Michigan beer was sold in bottles and cans; 24% in barrels and kegs, and 9% was sold on premises, which is beer consumed where it is produced. This would be beer sold on-site by brewpubs and microbreweries.
Michigan still only 0.9% of U.S. beer production
Even though Michigan beer production has soared in recent years, Michigan is not a major player in U.S. beer production.
In 2019, only 0.9% of the beer produced in the United States was made in Michigan.
To put Michigan’s current beer production in perspective, Stroh’s Brewery in Detroit was producing 6.4 million barrels a year in the late 1970s. That compares to 1.4 million barrels produced in all of Michigan in 2019.
Stroh’s closed its Detroit brewery in 1985 and the business dissolved in 2000. In 2016, Pabst -- which bought out part of Stroh’s -- partnered with Brew Detroit to resurrect the original Stroh’s recipe from the 1850s. The beer is marketed as Stroh’s Bohemian-Style Pilsner.
Craft beer production
Michigan produced 903,153 barrels of craft beer in 2019, about 3.5% of the national total.
The state ranks 10th in craft beer production, according to the national Brewers Association, and ranks sixth in number of craft breweries, with 400.
California is No. 1 in craft beer production, followed by Pennsylvania, Colorado, Florida and New York.
Beer sales in Michigan are going down
The federal numbers involve beer made in Michigan, regardless of where it was sold.
By contrast, data from the Michigan Liquor Control Commission involves beer sold in Michigan, including beer produced outside the state.
Those numbers show that 5.96 million barrels of beer were sold in Michigan in 2019, a 9% drop since 2007 and 0.7% drop compared to 2018.
Why beer sales are going down as beer production increases
So how can beer sales drop as beer production increases?
The explanation: Even within the state, Michigan-made beer is only 10% of the beer market. While that share has been growing, overall sales of beer are declining.
Sales of out-of-state beer dropped from 6.5 million barrels in 2007 to 5.4 million barrels in 2019.
