Jennifer Convertibles, Inc. has been sold to a new owner and some stores have been permanently closed — leaving only one location in New Jersey — an attorney for the company’s former owner confirmed to NJ Advance Media.
The retail company, based in Woodbury, New York, was closed down by the coronavirus pandemic, Michael S. Fox, an attorney for Morris Holdings, said.
Morris Holdings sold the company’s name, certain assets and locations to the holdings company Jennifer Optko, Fox said.
The stores that are remaining open include Paramus; the company’s flagship store in Farmingdale, New York; Carle Place, New York; and Coram, New York, Fox said.
Additional stores may reopen in New Jersey if the new owner chooses to do so, Fox said.
The company’s factory was also severely affected by the coronavirus pandemic, since Jennifer Convertibles sourced goods from China, Fox said. The company’s factory was in Wuhan, where the pandemic originated, he said.
“You can’t operate a company or retail store without inventory,” Fox said.
Jennifer Convertibles previously had 20 stores in the United States, Fox said. The company previously filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 2010. It emerged from bankruptcy in 2011.
The company did not respond to multiple requests for comment.
