SOUTHAMPTON — The owners of Smitty’s Package Store on College Highway have purchased the building across the street that once housed Harley-Davidson of Southampton for $2.4 million.
Management at Smitty’s, which moved to a new and expanded building in 2014, declined to comment Friday, saying they have not finalized plans.
There are no plans for the property filed with the town, said both Southampton Town Administrator Ed Gibson and Planning Board Chairman Paul Diemand.
The property’s new owner is Shivesha LLC, controlled by Bintula Patel of Westfield. Patel is also listed on paperwork with the secretary of state’s office as president of Mahraj Inc., owner of Smitty’s.
The 6.8-acre Harley property is zoned for highway commercial use. Dealership owner Aaron Patrick purchased the land and 27,000-square-foot building with his former business partner in 2016 for $2.5 million.
The Patrick family, doing business as Patrick Properties, was the seller in in the transaction recorded last week at the Hampshire County Registry of Deeds.
Harley-Davidson of Southampton closed Sept. 15 after having been in business since 2007. Soon after, the familiar Harley-Davidson shield logo was removed from the walls.
With that closing, the Pioneer Valley is without a Harley motorcycle dealer. Springfield’s Tibby’s Harley-Davidson closed in 2011 after 55 years in business.
The closest remaining dealerships are Ronnie’s Harley-Davidson in Pittsfield, American Harley-Davidson in Leominster, Sheldon’s Harley-Davidson in Auburn and Old School Harley-Davidson in Ellington, Connecticut.
Indian Motorcycle, selling the latest incarnation of the brand that originated in Springfield, has its dealership at 962 Southampton Road in Westfield.
