WALLINGFORD — A former bowling alley on South Colony Road was recently sold to the owner of two local auto dealerships.

Michael Mauro purchased the 29,189-square-foot Colony Lanes bowling alley at 600 S. Colony Road for $935,000, according to a statement released by Geenty Group Realtors of Branford on Thursday.

Mauro is the principal at Mauro Motors Inc., which owns Town & Country Auto Body of North Haven and BMW and Mercedes-Benz dealerships at 610 and 620 Washington Ave. in North Haven, according to several online business directories.

Steve Miller of Levy, Miller & Maretz, the agent for the buyer, said Mauro had yet to determine what he would do with the property. Mauro owns several other investment properties in the area used in a variety of ways, not just as dealerships, he said.

With the sale, Bowlero Wallingford Bowl at 980 N. Colony Road, is the last element of Wallingford’s bowling history. During a short time in the early 1960s, the town had four bowling alleys, including two now defunct duckpin lanes, at 107 S. Colony St. and 154 Center St., and the two regular alleys on Route 5. The Porto family of Wallingford built and opened the South Colony Road bowling alley in 1960 and it closed in 2018, after renovations to Wallingford Bowl were completed.

The deal closed last Thursday, said Kevin Geenty, who represented the seller. The bowling alley had been for sale by the Porto family’s 11-member ownership for at least five years for prices ranging from $1.4 million to $2 million, Geenty said.
