Is the Stock Market Open on Martin Luther King Jr. Day 2022? - Newsweek

rinwengi.blogspot.com

Martin Luther King Jr. was the American civil rights leader and icon famed for his "I have a dream" speech.

Such was Dr. King's legacy, a federal holiday is now observed on the third Monday in January, to coincide with his January 15 birthday.

However, the holiday is often sometimes not observed on this exact date, as is the case this year.

Americans consequently have an opportunity to pause and remember Dr. King's efforts in combating racial inequality on January 17, 2022.

As a result, some banks are closed on MLK day, while some private businesses may also shut their doors—but are stock markets open on this federal holiday?

U.S. stock markets, such as the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) and Nasdaq are respectively the world's largest and second-largest stock exchanges.

Their regular hours of operation run from Monday to Friday from 9.30am to 4pm ET, while their doors shut over the weekend.

The stock markets also traditionally close at 1pm on early-closure days, while bond markets close early at 2pm.

However, the stock markets are closed on Martin Luther Jr. Day 2022, as the days are a designated federal holiday, meaning traders are currently enjoying a well-earned three-day weekend.

Congress in 1885 decided federal employees should have certain days off from work and so introduced U.S. federal holidays to coincide with days of significance recognized and celebrated by Americans.

Although private-sector employees may not get the following days off, a federal holiday means non-essential federal government offices are closed and banks, post offices and schools may also be closed.
