Vicky White, the assistant director of corrections for the jail in Lauderdale County, Alabama, was in a “special relationship” with Casey Cole White, the man police believe she helped escape from lockup, authorities announced Tuesday.

Vicky and Casey White, a man who was incarcerated on charges of capital murder, have been on the run since they left the jail in downtown Florence on Friday morning at 9:41 a.m.

Lauderdale County Sheriff Rick Singleton, speaking at a press conference on Monday, announced that Vicky White is wanted on a warrant charging her with assisting in the escape.

She is described by law enforcement as 5 feet 5 inches tall and 160 pounds. She has brown eyes and blond or strawberry blond hair, according to state police.

The two, who are not related, were last seen on April 29 in Rogersville in a gold/copper 2007 Ford Edge with Alabama plates, the U.S. Marshals Service said. They are believed to be armed with an AR-15 and shotgun.

Here’s what we know about 56-year-old Vicky Sue Davis White:

She was retiring

After nearly 17 years with the Lauderdale County sheriff’s office, assistant director White was to work her last day before retirement on Friday. Sheriff Rick Singleton said she had been talking about retirement and going to the beach for three or four months.

On Friday morning, the sheriff said, Vicky White told jail employees that she was taking Casey White to nearby Lauderdale County courthouse for a mental health evaluation, before going to seek medical attention for herself. But there was no court appearance or medical appointment scheduled, Singleton said.

Instead, the two drove to a parking across town, where deputies later found her patrol vehicle abandoned.

The sheriff has said Vicky White was an “exemplary employee” before she violated policy by leaving the jail alone with Casey White.

She sold her house for $95,000

In the weeks before she disappeared, Vicky White sold her home in Lexington, Alabama for $95,550 — less than market value — the TV station WAAY 31 reported.

Sheriff Rick Singleton said the sale may have provided cash for Vicky White to use since she left with Casey White.

Vicky White had been living with her mother since selling the home.

She divorced a man in 1991 after a three-year marriage, court records show. He died earlier this year.

“I just can’t picture Vicky running off with that man,” her former mother-in-law, Frances White, said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

She said her former daughter-in-law was kind and always wanted to help others, but added that she was sometimes private.

“Vicky was a person who kept all of her thoughts and troubles to herself,” she said.

Vicky White had no children, her former-mother-in-law said.

The house she recently sold was a sprawling property of 4 acres she had originally bought to be close to her parents. The property, which included a trailer and barn, was “really too big” for one person, Frances White said.

She was in a “special relationship” with Casey White

People incarcerated in Lauderdale County over the weekend told investigators about the relationship. “That relationship has now been confirmed through our investigation by independent sources and means,” the sheriff’s office said in a statement Tuesday morning.

Casey White had been in the Lauderdale County jail since Feb. 25, according to the sheriff, and was to be returned to an Alabama prison later this month after attending court hearings.

Her family and coworkers are shocked

In an interview with WAAY, Vicky White’s mother said her daughter never mentioned Casey White.

“She didn’t say nothing to us about it,” Davis told the TV station.

Sheriff Singleton said jail employees are “devastated.” The sheriff said the director of the jail compared the mood inside the facility after the escape to a “funeral wake.”

“This is not the Vicky white we know, by any stretch of the imagination,” Singleton said Monday. “The employees are just devastated she was involved in this.

Lauderdale County District Attorney Chris Connolly told The Associated Press he was also shocked.

He last spoke to Vicky White on Thursday about transporting an inmate with a broken ankle to get medical care, and nothing seemed unusual.

“She is somebody I would have trusted with most anything. She was one of those people you could call if you needed something to happen at that jail. She was the go-to person,” Connolly said.

The sheriff says she may be in danger

Singleton has said that regardless of Vicky White’s involvement in the escape, he believes she is in danger, citing Casey White’s history of arrests and convictions. “He was in jail for capital murder...” the sheriff said Friday.

Speaking at Monday’s press conference, Marty Keely of the U.S. Marshals Service said that the public should not approach either Vicky White or Casey White.

“We consider both of them dangerous,” he said.

Singleton said Vicky White was armed with a gun when the pair left the jail Friday morning at 9:41 a.m.

She could face prison time

The U.S. Marshals Service is offering a $5,000 reward for information that helps find Vicky White.

A warrant issued Friday charges her with the felony crime of permitting or aiding the escape.

Under Alabama law, the crime is punishable by up to 10 years in prison.
