MUSKEGON, MI – For some, Friday night at the Getty Drive-In marked the beginning of summer as hundred of cars lined up in front of the big screens for a sold-out opening.

The popular drive in movie theater, 920 E. Summit Ave. in Muskegon, began its season June 5 with new coronavirus precautions in place, including allowing 600 -- half the usual number -- of cars through its gates.

“It is very exciting to be able to be open, most of our business is indoor theaters which haven’t been able to be open yet," said J.D. Loeks, owner of Getty Drive-In. "Even though the drive-in represents a small piece of our (Celebration Cinema’s) business it psychologically feels fantastic to be back in business and we are excited to create magical movie memories.”

The social distancing guidelines include:

-Customers are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time online at celebrationcinema.com, with the “online convenience fees” being waived through July. Those who purchase online, will be “fast-tracked” through separate entrance lines.

-The drive in will be at 50 percent capacity. With half the available spaces being used, attendees will have more room to spread out while maintaining safe social distancing.

-Only credit and debit cards – and no cash -- will be accepted.

-The line for the concession stand will be outside, and masks will be encouraged while inside the stand. Online ordering and direct delivery will be available soon.

“I think it is a great substitute for current conditions and it’s organized very well,” movie-goer Lorik Canaj said.

The first movies on tap for the season are “Trolls World Tour,” “The Invisible Man,” “Sonic,” and the original “Superman” movie from 1978.

“These are not ordinary times, and we are all doing the best we can to support and serve each other in meaningful ways,” Emily Loeks, spokeswoman for Studio C, said in a prepared statement. “This much I can guarantee, The Getty is a magical experience. It will be part of fun memories the community will share about the summer of 2020… and we all need a few of those.”
