A recall of salad products has expanded to include more than 90 different varieties and sizes including 49 types that were distributed and sold in Michigan. According to the Food and Drug Administration, Fresh Express has voluntarily recalled the various products which were produced at its Streamwood, Illinois facility.
Products that contain iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and/or carrot ingredients should not be eaten because of possible Cyclospora parasite exposure. That parasite can cause Cyclosporiasis, an intestinal infection which typically features symptoms such as severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea and vomiting, body aches and fatigue. The infection is typically cured by with an antibiotic and people respond quickly to treatment, the FDA says.
So far, more than 200 illnesses have been reported that linked to a Cyclospora outbreak primarily located in the Midwest. The products recalled were distributed and sold in 30 states and the District of Columbia.
The recall impacts products that are marked with a product code that starts with Z. That code can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the packaging. Any product that has a code of Z178 or numbers lower than 178 and feature iceberg lettuce, red cabbage and/or carrot ingredients should not be eaten.
To view the full list of recalled products, sizes, expiration dates and where they were distributed, visit the FDA website on the recall.
The company has contacted customers to warn them to “immediately remove recalled products from all store shelves, distribution, and other inventories” so the products aren’t further distributed. The company announced the recall of June 27 and the FDA issued a warning Monday.
Last week, a recall was announced impacting brands distributed at Hy-Vee, Jewel-Osco and Aldi grocery stores. Hy-Vee is among the brands involved in the most recent announcement.
