WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) - The Iowa lawmakers passed legislation Tuesday allowing restaurants to continue the selling of to-go alcoholic drinks.
The law's intention is to help small hospitality businesses amidst COVID-19. Cocktails and beers are intended for home consumption only. The legislation allows permanent selling of to-go beverages within Iowa.
ARI'Z in Waterloo is a martini lounge, their main source of income is through cocktails. The business is trying to keep afloat amidst their cocktail sales.
Co-Owner Aurion Redding, says the to-go cocktails brought in a whole new crowd of customers.
"There are some people that of course want to come out for a night out, and hang out, but some people just like to be in the comfort of their own home," Redding said. "That's why to-go's worked so well for us, we picked up a bunch of customers we probably wouldn't of had."
COVID-19 forced restaurants to change the way they operated often from day-to-day depending on the guidance from the state.
"We just want to comply with the rules, if the governor puts out a statement saying bars can't do to-go's, we won't do to-go's anymore," Redding said.
There are more than 30 states currently allowing use of to-go alcoholic drinks due to COVID-19.
There are only four states looking to make it permanent.
