The covid-19 pandemic continues to dominate daily life and news, with state leaders imposing restrictions on bars and restaurants and asking more travelers to self-quarantine as the number of cases continues to increase.

Giant Eagle is defending itself in court against a lawsuit that calls its policy requiring shoppers to wear face masks discriminatory.

With experts saying it’s questionable if college students will return to campuses this fall, the financially struggling Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education is considering joining together six of its 14 universities.

In other news, a buyer is working on Bill Mazeroski’s former Hempfield house after buying the baseball Hall of Famer’s home at an auction, and two ice cream shops in the Pittsburgh region were ranked among the state’s best.

Bill Mazeroski’s former Hempfield house sells

Nathaniel Smirga, a lineman for West Penn Power Co. in Greensburg, bought the home of Pittsburgh Pirates Hall of Famer Bill Mazeroski in Hempfield for $150,000 at an auction in March.

Smirga outbid about four others at an auction conducted by Mark Ferry Auctioneers of Unity. The former Arona resident is updating the house.

Jeanine Ferry of Mark Ferry Auctioneers said the Mazeroskis were pleased with the results of the auction. They bought the property in 1959 for $4,600, according to the county Recorders of Deeds Office.

2 Western Pennsylvania shops among state’s top creameries

Betsy’s Ice Cream of Mt. Lebanon and Kerber’s Dairy of North Huntingdon were among 26 creameries cited by VisitPA, the state’s official tourism website.

Besty’s made the top five, coming in at fourth, while Kerber’s made the list at No. 8.

Both placed higher than the vaunted Penn State Berkey Creamery, which ranked 14th.

Coronavirus restrictions, requirements tightened

Gov. Tom Wolf placed more restrictions on bars and restaurants in response to an increase in covid-19 cases.

Included was limiting bars and restaurants to a quarter of their indoor capacity, allowing alcohol only with food sales, and closing bars and nightclubs that don’t serve food. Also, businesses must have employees work remotely, if the work does not need to be done in an office.

Four states — Delaware, Iowa, Kansas and Oklahoma — were added to a travel quarantine recommendation that had already included 15 states — Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Louisiana, Mississippi, Nevada, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Utah.

Those who return from those states are asked to self-quarantine for 14 days upon returning to Pennsylvania.

Pennsylvania could integrate 6 universities

The Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education took the first step in a two-year process that could see six of its 14 universities integrated into three operating units.

The State System Board of Governors instructed Chancellor Daniel Greenstein to launch a three-month financial review into joining California and Clairon; Slippery Rock and Edinboro; and Lock Haven and Mansfield universities.

The proposed integration plan calls for the schools to remain open but with each of the paired institutions operating with a single leadership team, faculty and staff and academic program.

Giant Eagle defends mask requirement

Giant Eagle defended itself in a lawsuit filed by more than 30 people claiming its face mask policy discriminates against disabled shoppers.

Lawyers for the grocer said customers have options other than shopping in stores, including curbside pickup, home delivery and the use of a personal shopper.

Several plaintiffs claim Giant Eagle employees yelled at them and physically escorted them from stores when they tried to shop without masks.
