Syracuse’s historic W.C. Lipe Mansion has a new owner.
Built in 1903 by famous local architect Archimedes Russell, the landmark house at 114 Summit Ave. was purchased at auction on July 10 by local real estate broker Amjad Hasan, of First Choice Realty and Property.
His winning bid was for $268,322.
Hasan’s plan for the eight-bedroom house is to fix it up for resale.
“I have already spent $2,000 in dumpsters,” he said.
He has begun working on the exterior trim and “tidying up the landscape.” A new roof had been installed a few years ago by the previous owners.
Inside, the 4,686 square foot house is in remarkably good shape Hasan believes, and all it really needs is a “good cleaning,” especially the home’s original hardwood floors.
A piano from 1903 is one of the many original items Hasan has discovered in the house.
“It is crazy,” he said.
An apartment over the garage, with Italian marble tile in the bathroom is “beautiful,” according to Hasan.
“Whoever gets the house, could easily make $1,000 to $1,500 a month renting out the apartment.”
The brick and stone-faced house with a rounded front porch was considered one of the Syracuse’s “finest houses of recent construction,” according to newspapers, when it was finished in 1903.
Willard Lipe was a pioneer of Syracuse industry. He took over the family business when his father, Charles, died in 1887.
The house was considered state-of-the-art at the time with no expenses spared in its construction and engineering.
Amenities like a central vacuum system, intercom phones and light switches downstairs that turned on lights upstairs were included. All the rooms on the second floor were interconnected and had adjoining dressing rooms or washrooms.
The home was owned by the McDermott family from 1964 to 2006 and Peter and Laura McDermott did an extensive renovation of it after they purchased it from his parents in 1993.
The McDermotts remodeled bathrooms, converted a wood-burning fireplace to gas, installed thermal windows and added more custom-oak built-ins.
They also completely remodeled the vaulted carriage house, which can serve as guest or in-law quarters with a full kitchen, living room, marble-trimmed bathroom with a see-through shower and Jacuzzi tub, and bedroom.
The house sold on May 9, 2006 for $295,000.
The mansion had been used as a bed and breakfast as recently as 2018, earning many five-star reviews on tripadvisor.com before being foreclosed on.
Hasan knew the house well and said “he always loved the spot” it sat in the Strathmore neighborhood of Syracuse.
He thought for a moment of moving into the Lipe Mansion himself but decided to remain at his current home in Camillus.
Hasan has purchased several homes locally from auction.com and fixed them up for resale.
But none, he admits, are “as big” as the Lipe Mansion.
