Stock indexes closed higher ahead of Nvidia's earnings, which easily beat Wall Street expectations and sent the chip maker's shares surging after the market close.
Investors had plenty of other quarterly reports to digest during the regular session. Retailers including Foot Locker, Abercrombie & Fitch and Williams-Sonoma reported mixed results, painting a complicated picture of consumer health.
Toll Brothers' report showed that homebuilding remains a point of strength in the economy, despite the climb in mortgage rates.
Stocks gained. The Nasdaq Composite led the way, up about 1.6%. The S&P 500 rose 1.1% for its best day since June. The Dow industrials gained 0.5%.
U.S. business activity rose at a weaker pace in August, according to a purchasing managers' survey. The reading boosted Treasurys, with the yield on the 10-year note declining from Tuesday's 16-year high.
European bonds also rallied after surveys showed business activity there contracting more than expected.
Peloton and Foot Locker shares plunged, after their results disappointed investors. But Abercrombie & Fitch, Williams-Sonoma and Kohl's shares rose after their own quarterly reports.
Global stocks mostly rose. The Stoxx Europe 600, Hong Kong’s Hang Seng Index and Japan’s Nikkei 225 all gained. The Shanghai Composite fell 1.3% to its lowest close this year.
